Metaphor: ReFantazio

New Game+ Explained in Metaphor: ReFantazio

By
Ben Chard

Fans of Sega Atlus’ titles (or JRPGs in general) may be used to the concept of a New Game+ that unlocks after finishing it for the first time. You’ll be pleased to learn that such a feature does exist in Metaphor: ReFantazio and although you’ll be able to carry some things over, not everything will be transferable. There’s also some more goodies to discover on New Game+ so keep reading to learn everything there is to know about it in Metaphor.

You’ll gain access to the Regicide difficulty mode on New Game+ of Metaphor: ReFantazio.

What Unlocks and Carries Over in New Game+?

The burning question on everyone’s lips is what carries over to your second playthrough of this massive game, after all, should you spend some time before the end of your first run through to help your second playthrough more, where you’ll find yourself back at the start of the game.

In New Game+ in Metaphor: ReFantazio, the following unlocks and carries over:

  • Currently owned items (with some exceptions)
  • Money
  • MAG
  • Royal Virtues Ranks
  • Scanned Enemies
  • Memorandum
  • Archetype Statues
  • Total Playtime
  • Regicide Difficulty
  • New superboss in Akademia

With that in mind, that means the following does not carry over to New Game+:

  • Your current Level (this is reset)
  • Your Bond Ranks (although you will carry over the key item for maxing a Bond)
  • Key Items needed for the story
  • Quest status

If you want to learn more about what this means for you, keep reading from more details.

Currently Owned Items

For the most part, you’ll gain access to nearly all of your items from your first playthrough. This means any and all consumables, ingredients, mask ingredients, and AEXP items will all be there with you. If you have the higher-tier battle items, that can make the opening stages of a NG+ playthrough very simple.

This will also translate to many of your Key Items that carry over too. Although you won’t keep the status of your Bond ranks, you will still have the item the Follower gave you at the end of the game for maxing it (that increases the stats of their Archetype when equipped). You’ll also find every recipe and Vessel (that unlocks Summons) are still there, waiting for you.

Most importantly, though, is the fact that all of your equipment will carry over, a lot this will make large stretches of the game much much easier, even on Regicide mode.

Money and MAG

Hopefully you stockpiled a fair amount of cash and MAG by the end of your first playthrough, as you’ll have access to the full amount come the start of a New Game+. While money won’t be as useful for the most part, MAG will make your life a lot easier when studying Archetypes or inheriting skills.

Royal Virtues Ranks

The status of your Royal Virtues will carry over completely, so if you didn’t manage to raise all of them to Rank 5, you can now easily finish that off for the respective Trophy/Achievement. Additionally, if you have maxed your Royal Virtues, it means any Bond events will never be gated by Royal Virtues, allowing you to max them a lot quicker on NG+.

Scanned Enemies

This is more useful than you may expect, as due to your Bond’s resetting, you won’t have access to "Alonzo" iconAlonzo’s excellent ability that reveals the weakness of all enemies. It will also show you the weakness of every boss you reach too, handy!

Memorandum

The Memorandum provides vital insight on everything there is to know in Metaphor: ReFantazio and carrying over your status of the Memorandum is useful. If you neglected to look at during the controllable parts of the ending, you’ll find some interesting new entries too.

(1 of 2) The majority of your equipment and items will carry over to New Game+, alongside your Max Bond Key Items.

Archetype Statuses

This is an interesting one, in that all of your ranks for Archetypes will be carried over and, once you unlock skill inheriting, you’ll be able to carry over any skill. Unfortunately, due to your Bonds resetting, you’ll need to unlock the Archetypes all over again, although slightly easier this time as you won’t have to master any previous Archetypes. This will still make you far more powerful than anything you’ll encounter for the most part, it just requires a bit of legwork still. Of course, you won’t get access to those Royal Archetypes until the end of the game too, unfortunately.

Total Playtime and Regicide Difficulty

As you may expect, your current playtime will continue to run from where you left off, this means you can expect some truly massive playtimes if you’re playing through Metaphor: ReFantazio more than once.

Regicide is the ultimate difficulty and is only available on New Game+, beware though, once you select this, you won’t be able to lower it again as you’re locked into it. Although enemies will hit harder and get extra turns, you will get more EXP, Money, and MAG to offset it a bit, additionally, you’ll also be far more powerful earlier on.

New Superboss in Akademia

Despite already featuring some seriously tough encounters in your first playthrough, those of you looking for the ultimate challenge can find it in New Game+. Once you reach Akademia for the first time, you’ll see that the Book of Apocalypse has now moved, allowing you to access it. Doing so will put you into a battle against the Redscale Apocalypse Dragon, this fearsome foe is Level 99 and is the toughest battle in Metaphor: ReFantazio!
