Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Terminology

By
Seren Morgan-Roberts

Description

This page is dedicated to helping beginners learn the terminology of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Lots of the phrases and words in this list are used frequently in the Animal Crossing Community but are not official phrases in the game itself.

  • Bells - Bells are the currency used in the Animal Crossing universe.

  • NMT - This is an abbreviation of Nook Miles Tickets and is used frequently in online forums.

  • Dodo Code - This is the code that Orville at the Airport will give you when you open your airport. You can give anyone your dodo code and they’ll be able to visit your island.

  • Terraforming - Terraforming is the commonly used term for using the Island Designer tool to change your island’s landscape.

  • Turnips - Turnips are not a food or a vegetable to be planted. Rather, in this game, they are bought for a lower price from Daisy Mae, and then sold to Timmy and Tommy for a higher price.

  • The Stalk Market - The Stalk Market is what players refer to as the buying and selling of turnips with the goal of making a profit in mind. It is a pun on the term Stock Market.

  • Dreamies - Dreamies are a player’s dream villagers. These are entirely based on personal preference.

  • In Boxes - When your villager is “in boxes”, they are about to move from your island. Their home is all packed up and in boxes.

  • Time-Travelling (TT) - You can time-travel in Animal Crossing: New Horizons if you change your Switch’s date and time. This way, you can skip days, months and even years.

  • Twins - Sometimes, people will refer to Timmy and Tommy as the twins.

  • Cataloging - When you pick up an item, it is registered in your catalog (accessible via the Nookstop). In the Animal Crossing community, asking if you can catalog an item of another player’s means you want to pick it up and register it to your own catalog and then drop it back down again. If you are cataloging you must never steal the items.
